Motion Design Guidelines
Role: Project Lead & Motion Design Contributor
Project: Motion System Development & Creative Standards
I served as the project lead for the development of our internal motion design guidelines—an initiative aimed at unifying animation practices across our creative team and elevating the overall quality and consistency of motion in our work.
Research
The project began with a dedicated research phase, where I spent several months analyzing how top brands approached motion systems. I compiled and synthesized this research into a strategic presentation, which I delivered to both our Creative Director and Manager to gain alignment and approval to move forward. My research also included looking to new, award winning content to synthesize what the current trends were.
Process
Once approved, I led the development process—collaborating closely with our graphic designers and video team (photo + video editors) to ensure the system was grounded in real creative workflows. Without an internal engineering team, our approach focused on building practical, design-driven solutions.
Key contributions included:
Creating a structured outline of motion principles, design patterns, and deliverables based on research and internal needs.
Partnering with my Manager to shape the final iteration of the guidelines, refining both visual standards and documentation.
Overseeing the production of high-quality alpha channel exports and modular MOGRTs (Motion Graphics Templates) for streamlined use in video and design projects.
Writing and organizing a comprehensive standard operating procedure (SOP) that detailed best practices and ensured consistency across all future uses.
Rolling out the final guide company-wide as a shared creative resource and motion toolkit.
Results
This initiative not only established a strong foundation for motion within our brand system, but also empowered our creative team with scalable tools and clear guidance to deliver cohesive, engaging visual experiences. After a trial rolling out the guidelines and key collaboration with the Video Team members to hone and refine the interface and features included in the MOGRTs.
